Hamradio Deluxe – Reliable Logging with Log4OM and WSJT-X
In modern amateur radio, a reliable logbook is essential. Not only for keeping track of daily QSOs, but also as a dependable backup when primary systems fail. For my station, I deliberately chose a combination of Log4OM and WSJT-X. This setup is what I personally call Hamradio Deluxe – robust, flexible, and future-proof.
The Heart of Logging – Log4OM
Log4OM is a powerful and versatile logging application, perfectly suited for everyday use as well as long-term backup logging. It offers advanced database capabilities, DXCC tracking, QSL management (LoTW, eQSL, Club Log), and seamless integration with digital mode software.
What makes Log4OM especially valuable for my station:
- Reliable and secure storage of all QSO data
- Extensive statistics and award tracking
- Seamless integration with WSJT-X
- Ideal as a central logging system when using multiple applications
This ensures that no contacts are ever lost, even when experimenting with different software configurations.
WSJT-X – Digital Operation at a High Level
For digital modes such as FT8, FT4, and JT65, WSJT-X has become the worldwide standard. Over time, many different versions have appeared, each offering specific enhancements and refinements.
My Choice – WSJT-X Version 3.0.0 Improved Plus
I personally prefer the WSJT-X version 3.0.0 – Improved Plus edition. This version includes several advanced features that significantly improve DX operation and overall workflow.
The Improved Plus edition is available in three variants:
- Wide-screen version
- AL version (this is the version I use)
- Standard layout version

- Exclude specific countries
- Select or disable entire continents
- Block individual callsigns
This functionality is extremely useful for focused DX hunting. Nearby countries such as Belgium, Germany, and other surrounding regions can be excluded, allowing full concentration on rare and distant stations.
Efficient DX-Oriented Operation
By combining Log4OM with WSJT-X Improved Plus, a highly efficient workflow is created. QSOs are logged automatically, statistics remain up-to-date, and you retain full control over which stations and regions you want to work.
For the serious radio amateur who wants to maximize performance from digital modes, this combination is highly recommended.
JTAlert
JTAlert is a popular companion application for WSJT-X, JTDX and MSHV. It provides real-time alerts for stations you need, such as new DXCC entities, new grid squares, band or mode confirmations.
JTAlert continuously monitors decoded signals and notifies you instantly when a desired callsign appears. Alerts can be based on DXCC, callsign, grid, CQ zones, IOTA and many other criteria. This makes JTAlert an essential tool for DX hunters and award chasers.
The software also integrates seamlessly with logging programs such as Log4OM, HRD Logbook, N1MM Logger+ and others, allowing automatic QSO logging and confirmation tracking.
JTAlert supports audio and visual alerts, LoTW and eQSL status checking, and extensive customization options. It is widely used by operators working digital modes like FT8, FT4, JT65 and JT9.

NetTime
NetTime is a free, open-source network time synchronization tool for Windows. It is designed to keep your computer’s system clock accurate by synchronizing it with NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers on the internet or within a local network. NetTime is well known for being lightweight, simple and unobtrusive.
Accurate time synchronization is essential for digital amateur radio modes such as FT8, FT4 and other weak-signal applications where timing accuracy is critical.
Key Features and Operation
- High accuracy: Synchronizes system time with millisecond precision.
- Protocol support: Supports SNTP/NTP (Network Time Protocol), Time (RFC868) and UnixTime.
- Automatic operation: Can run as a Windows service, starting automatically with the operating system and running silently in the background.
- Flexible synchronization intervals: User-configurable update intervals, such as hourly or daily synchronization.
- Server and client mode: NetTime can function not only as a time client, but also as a time server for other computers on a local network.
- Network usage: Uses UDP port 123 for NTP communication.
Installation and Usage
- Download: The latest versions (e.g. v3.14) are available from timesynctool.com or SourceForge.
- Configuration: After installation, NetTime runs in the system tray (next to the clock). NTP servers can be managed through the Settings menu.
- Default servers: Comes preconfigured with a list of public NTP servers, such as time.google.com and pool.ntp.org.
- Manual update: Click Update Now to synchronize the time immediately.
Difference Between NetTime and Windows “net time”
It is important not to confuse NetTime with the Windows command NET TIME.
- NetTime (application): A third-party tool designed for continuous synchronization with internet-based NTP servers.
- net time (command): A built-in Windows command-line utility used to synchronize time with a specific domain controller or time server in a Windows network.

NetTime is compatible with modern Windows operating systems, including Windows 10, Windows 11 and various Windows Server editions.
